Substance Use and Oral Health

Objectives:  

• Describe the definition, terminology, epidemiology of substance use in the United States, with an emphasis on People Living with HIV (PLWH). 

• Describe the effect of substance use on HIV-progression and adherence to HAART. 

• Describe the spectrum of impact of substance use on oral health in PLWH. 

• Describe the oral manifestations of opiates, methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana, benzodiazepines, ecstasy and others. 

• Describe the dental management considerations in PLWH relevant to substance use.
